On the Road to Clinical Research

著者名: Shunichi Fukuhara
作品詳細

This first English edition of On the Road to Clinical Research is the long-awaited translation of Professor Shunichi Fukuhara's Japanese-language two-volume handbook 臨床研究の道標 (rinshoukenkyuu no michishirube), the fruit of years of effort in the Master's program in Clinical Research that he established at Kyoto University (Japan). On the Road to Clinical Research, like the program from which it emerged, are designed to awaken would-be researchers around the world to the hardships and dismay awaiting them unless, through foresight and preparation, they avoid common pitfalls and misunderstandings. On the Road to Clinical Research is no "for Dummies" book but designed primarily for competent clinicians who -- however experienced and seriously committed they may be to their calling -- are still complete beginners when it comes to research. Clinical studies are costly and time-consuming. What is the point of research that will be disputed or contradicted by later studies because its design was flawed? The longest journey begins with the first steps. It is better get everything right before one begins and avoid wasted efforts. On the Road to Clinical Research is also a book for everyone in healthcare who wants to know what clinical research is about, to understand published papers, and to understand how clinical research should be undertaken. It explains how high-quality differs from low-quality research. It gives accessible explanations of many terms that confuse the layperson (or are bandied about carelessly by professionals who ought to know better than to speak in coded language), such as the differences between prevalence and incidence, confounding and bias, factors and variables. There's nothing stiff or pedantically scholastic about this volume. It speaks in the author's impassioned voice. Follow Olive, the avatar of a young clinician, as she meets her mentor, Dr Rin-Q (a pun on the Japanese term for clinical research), and learns the ropes through dialogs that, step by step, awaken her to misconceptions and gaps in her planning. On the Road to Clinical Research contains pit stops along the way, refreshers and refreshments, quizzes, and stock-taking to ensure solid acquisition. Neither a treatise on statistics nor a mere quickie "how-to" guide with tips on writing papers and getting one's research published, it focuses on preparing clinicians to undertake quality studies that are inherently publishable because their valid, reliable, and relevant findings will contribute to science and healthcare. In short, On the Road to Clinical Research paves the path to research literacy. Do not think it promises mastery of every aspect of clinical research from A to Z: it cannot teach readers everything professionals need to know about every aspect of research in clinical medicine. Instead it guides readers toward the achievement of goals they personally decide and define, helping them to frame questions in such a way that, as travelers On the Road to Clinical Research, they reach their destination with as little muddling, straying, back-tracking, and disorientation as possible. It's everyone's first sure steps On the Road to Clinical Research.
